About Us
Evie Warner and Al Davis Bed and Breakfast Hawaii started as an idea when we first visited Kauai in the winter of 1977-1978. Until that time neither of us had entertained the thought of living in Hawaii let alone starting a new business which we knew little or nothing about. But as so many visitors to Hawaii discover, a vacation in Hawaii seems to stir up a longing to live in the Islands. One day, while hiking along the Na Pali Coast on the way to Hanakapiai Beach, experiencing more beauty than we had ever seen in one place, we began toying with the idea of finding something to do that would allow us to live in this tropical splendor. What better thing could we do than have a home, take in guests, and share Kauai with them? Two or three days later we bought a house we felt was perfect for our needs. From that point on it was simply a matter of returning home and getting everyone ready for the big move. That simple task took about 20 months, and by August of 1979 we were settled on Kauai. By then we had even contacted a B & B organization out of Princeton, New Jersey, which we felt sure could supply us with plenty of guests. We anxiously awaited their answer. We did not have to wait long, and by September of 1979 we knew that neither they nor anyone they knew of was interested in bed and breakfast in Hawaii. Keep in mind that in 1979 bed and breakfast was a relatively new thing springing up in the U.S., and when we told people what we were doing they envisioned we were serving breakfast in bed! Yes, necessity is the mother of invention. In October, 1979, we formed our own Bed and Breakfast group by running an ad in the Kauai paper asking people to become members of an island network of homes. The network at that time consisted of one home - ours. Now it is 2000, we have over twenty years experience behind us, and our network has grown to over 200 homes, each one personally inspected, with homes on all the Islands. We have met hundreds of fascinating people and are more convinced than ever that B & B is a great way to travel, especially in Hawaii! Bed
